" + "As a mobile phone user I have been unwittingly contributing to climate change. This is because, when I detached my mobile phone from its charger each day, leaving the charger plugged in at the wall, I was wasting electricity. I have now been made aware that unless I actually unplug my mobile phone charger or switch it off at the wall, it pointlessly continues to draw power.
" + "Not only has using this electricity cost me money, it has also wasted energy and unnecessarily contributed to the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted into the atmosphere, adding to the greenhouse gases responsible for causing climate change.
" + "One of the key ways of reducing human impact on climate change is by reducing our energy use. It is the responsibility of government, individuals and business to take action to reduce unnecessary energy consumption.
" + "I am therefore writing to you as part of the Unpluggit campaign (www.unpluggit.co.uk), supported by the Ben and Jerry's and WWF Climate Change College, which raises awareness about the energy we waste in our homes. Unpluggit aims to help people change their behaviours - focusing first on the energy wasted by leaving mobile phone chargers left plugged in when not in use.

In conjunction with phone manufacturers, if not already done so, sign up to the principle of the international ”1 watt initiative” to develop chargers with absolute minimum ”no load” energy consumption by 2010 (or sooner) using current technology and use this as a stepping stone to work across the mobile phone industry to developing standardised zero energy waste phone chargers in the longer term.
